Body Contouring Treatments Demystified

We get it! Problem areas like the lower abdomen, thighs, or bra fat can feel impossible to get rid of – especially as we age! And there’s no shame in that.

Is your fitness routine failing to deliver your desired results? Are there parts of your body that don’t look the way you want them to? Maybe you’ve lost a bunch of weight but still have a few stubborn areas and want a little extra help.

Thanks to ever-improving technology, there are more non-surgical and minimally invasive treatments for getting rid of fat than ever. Of course, not all methods are well-suited for everyone so keep reading to learn about non-surgical body sculpting solutions.

CoolSculpting

What is it?
CoolSculpting uses cryolipolysis to remove stubborn fat by freezing fat cells under your skin to destroy them.

Is it safe?
The FDA cleared this procedure in 2010, for use in treating the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and chin.

How convenient is it?
During a treatment, the doctor will put a gel pad on the surface of your skin. Rounded paddles are used to suction your skin and fat. Because  of its vacuum-like applicator, CoolSculpting tends to cause more initial discomfort than other body shaping treatments. However it’s not painful and there is little to no downtime necessary after a treatment.

Is it effective?
People typically see results after about 4-6 weeks. It usually takes a series of treatments to get your optimum results or multiple treatments to the same area. Results can be long-lasting, unless you gain weight. CoolSculpting is not an ideal option if you’re looking to lose a lot of weight. It is intended to target stubborn fat areas that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise.

A minority of CoolSculpt cases result in Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia (PAH), known commonly as the ‘stick of butter effect.’ The treated fat area actually grows larger and firmer and, due to the shape of the CoolSculpt machine, sometimes resembles a stick of butter. PAH is not life-threatening and can be treated with liposuction.

Patients may feel pinching, pulling, numbness, and pain for minutes at a time during the procedure, as well as itching and swelling in the downtime afterwards.

How is it different than other body contouring options?
It freezes and destroys fat cells. Other body contouring options, like Emsculpt, use an electromagnetic field or heat to stimulate muscle contractions, causing muscle growth and fat loss.

Working out and eating well can do wonders for your body. But it can still be tough to lose those last few pounds!
