Best Techniques for Youthful Eye Treatments
Patients often complain of dark circles, fat pockets in the lower eyelids, or a hollow look under their eyes. Today, your favorite medical spa is here to tell you how to treat those under-eye hollows, bags, or dark circles!
What causes sunken under-eyes?
The skin under your eyes is very delicate, which is why it can appear sunken or have darker coloring than the rest of your face. Hollow eyes can be caused by the loss of orbital fat in the lower eyelids.
AGING
Patients don’t always realize this but under-eye hollows are part of the aging process.
Collagen is an abundant protein in your body and is what gives the skin strength and flexibility. As you age, your body loses collagen. Where is the first place where it’s most noticeable? The skin under your eyes. Collagen loss causes eyes to settle back into the eye sockets, making them appear sunken.
Age plays a role. But there are other contributing factors and we see a lot of younger people affected by sunken eyes.
GENETICS
The position of the eyes in the sockets is largely due to hereditary factors which means sunken eyes can be caused by a person’s DNA. Applying cucumbers and using products containing vitamin C might help temporarily fix your dark circles that accompany eye hollows, but if you have a strong genetic tendency towards deep creases under the eye, lifestyle alone won’t change your anatomy.
LIFESTYLE
Yep, it’s true: lack of sleep could be causing those bags under your eyes. Your body could be dehydrated. Or you’ve been drinking too much coffee or soda. Maybe you have allergies that are affecting your eyelids and skin. Smoking doesn’t help either!
Want a refreshed look?
There are a variety of treatment options for sunken under-eyes and treatment isn’t going to be the same for every person; it all depends on the age of the skin, underlying genetics, and more. Sometimes only filler is necessary. Sometimes skin rejuvenation is needed.
It is important to use non-hydrophilic fillers under the eyes, to avoid causing puffiness or edema. Dermal fillers such as Radiesse and Bellafill are excluded since they can cause nodule formation. Products commonly used for under the eye procedures include Voluma (often blended), Belotero, Volbella, or Vollure, all of which are hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid fillers are the best route for filling recessed orbital rims.
Under-eye filler often needs to be touched up at six months, but then can last two to four years!
